NDP issues statement on Toronto Police arrests

QUEEN’S PARK — In response to the arrests of eight Toronto police officers (seven current and one retired) on multiple serious charges, Ontario NDP Shadow Solicitor General Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) and Shadow Attorney General Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre) have issued the following statement:

“I want to begin by commending York Regional Police, and the more than 400 officers across multiple services who dedicated months of painstaking work to this investigation,” said Stevens. “Trust in our police services must be maintained through a commitment by the Toronto Police Service and Solicitor General to leave no stone unturned in this investigation. The seriousness of these charges demands nothing less.”

“This investigation touches on the trust Ontarians place in law enforcement, and demands a thorough, unobstructed public oversight investigation concurrent with this criminal investigation,” said Wong-Tam. “This is a deeply troubling situation. We hope to see accountability and transparency, so that trust in our province’s law enforcement and our justice system isn’t further eroded."
